The Welsh Marches

The Welsh Marches - by A E Housman
Tune: High Germany (traditional)
This is the start of a long poem by A E Housman which explores the interface of the Welsh and English along the line of the Marches.
At school in Shrewsbury in the 1960s Housman's 'Shropshire Lad' was a constant presence - I was frequently required to translate parts of it into truly bad elegiac couplets in A level Latin classes.
Despite this, and despite their falling far from fashionable approval, I find great pleasure in the poems now.
