Passing Show
Dedicated with great respect to the late Ronnie Lane of Fishpool Cottage - musician, songwriter and sheep farmer.
He gave the Small Faces and the Faces some credible roots and he took his Slim Chance and Passing Show out on tours that mixed English and American music with circus and music hall.
He inspired the soul and the music of every ramshackle band I've played in.
He died in the Rocky Mountains well before his time and just when we needed his joyous music the most. But he believed in reincarnation, so maybe he's still around somewhere.
There’s no need to worry that the show is passing through
No need to wring your hands wondering what you’re gonna do
The caravan moves on but it comes back to you
Always one more for the road
Life is like a gypsy – it’s coming round again
The sweating and the fretting well it’s all done in vain
There’s nothing to be lost and there’s nothing to be gained
Always one more for the road
Just behind the mountain, in the clear country air
Underneath the plantation, it’s still waiting there
Down the Drum and Monkey you’re still rolling along
And the walls of the Fishpool still echo with the song
There’s sheep up on the hillside, there’s chicken in the yard
Underneath the winter sky the weather may hit hard
The future’s not the end though- it’s written in the cards
Always one more for the road
They’re pulling down the canvas, they’re folding up the tent
You spend a lifetime wondering where that lifetime went
The only money you’ve used well’s the money that you’ve spent
Always one more for the road
So have a drink on me friend and sing another song
Nothing lasts for ever, no nothing lasts that long
Every road will lead you home, no turning’s ever wrong
Always one more for the road
Just behind the mountain, in the clear country air
Underneath the plantation, it’s still waiting there
Down the Drum and Monkey you’re still rolling along
And the walls of the Fishpool still echo with the song
